This was the second time we had visited, and definitely won't be the last. I just love the whole feel of this beautiful place, the food, the drinks, the shopping and the gorgeous architecture is what draws me back. If you are looking for a weekend break then this is the place to go. We stayed in this lovely little apartment in one of the back streets close to Piazza Bra which is where the arena is located.
We spent the first day just wondering through the streets, looking around the shops and stopping every hour or so for our favourite Aperol spritz! It was just so nice to spend some quality time together without being Mum and Dad, it was definitely needed! We found the most amazing little bar right by our apartment which was sooo cheap. A pint of beer or glass of Aperol was only 2 euros, whereas if you went to a bar in Piazza Bra you would spend 6 euros for the same drink. Also, anyone who has been to Italy would know that they like to feed you! With every drink you also get an endless supply of crisps, olives, sundried tomatoes... you never have to buy snacks! We spent most evenings in here sitting on the terrace out the back.
The next few days we decided to be real tourists and do some sightseeing, we went up to the top of the clock tower in Piazza Erbe which has amazing views all over Verona and went to visit Romeo and Juliets balcony. Everything is fairly close to each other so there is no need for cars or taxis. I also much prefer to eat in Piazza Erbe, for one it is cheaper and two, I could sit and people watch there all day!
On the Saturday we noticed it was a lot busier, and they were setting up some stalls in both of the Piazzas. We found out they were doing a wine tasting event, and this made me extremely happy! I had mentioned to Stu that I wanted to do wine tasting whilst we were there so this was perfect. In the evening they had lots of different local wines to taste. We had to buy some tokens (I think it was 15 euros for 10 tokens) And then you paid for the different wines with the tokens. It was a really good evening, but so so busy. Apparently it is something they do every year.
The Sunday was our last day so we decided to do a little bit of shopping and eat all day! My perfect day. As much as I enjoy time together, I do miss the kids! But I think it is definitely good to have some child free time every so often just to be 'you' again!
Have you visited or plan to visit Verona?? Let me know in the comments! xx
